Full description
2-Day Tour · Berat · Gjirokastra · 2 UNESCO World Heritage Sites
This two-day tour combines two of the best sites in Southern Albania — both on the UNESCO World Heritage list and both with their own unique charm. Berat and Gjirokastra are destinations that transcend the ordinary, inviting you to embark on a captivating journey through history and architecture — with timeless beauty, rich heritage, and unparalleled charm that leaves an indelible mark on your soul.
🏰 Day 1 — Tirana – Gjirokastra Our tour leader picks you up at your hotel in Tirana. We head to Gjirokastra — "The Stone City" — a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Situated in Southern Albania on the eastern side of mountain Mali i Gjere, Gjirokastra resembles a fortified city where every single house is like a small fortress. The castle, built in the 4th century AD, is considered one of the best-preserved medieval towns in the Balkans. Every five years it becomes the capital of Albanian folklore and traditional music. We pass through the medieval bazaar and visit one of the best-preserved original houses of Gjirokastra. Overnight in Gjirokastra.
🏛️ Day 2 — Gjirokastra – Berat – Tirana After breakfast we head to Berat — the "City of 1001 Windows" and UNESCO World Heritage Site. Walking through the narrow stone streets offers a fantastic view of medieval houses with windows that seem to stand on top of each other. The city's life began in the 6th–5th century BC as an Illyrian settlement. Berat has it all — a beautiful medieval castle, ancient churches and mosques, a lively lower town of grand old houses on steep hillsides, an old stone bridge, great museums, and communist-era remains. Berat is also the birthplace of Onufri — the famous Balkan painter known for his distinctive reddish colour still difficult to imitate. We visit the Gorica Neighbourhood before driving back to Tirana.
